I watched the Stella Meghie directed film “The Photograph” tonight for the second time and eight minutes in I was hit with a Black wave of Black feels. I for one was caught up in the nostalgia of the movie, the old 35 mm Nikon that Christine shot with, her big dreams and also the what if’s of my own life.

I’ve had a secret love affair with photography most of my life, so movies like “The Photograph” draw me in closer (like “Love Jones”) than other films. The old photographs, dark room, and sound of the shutter are all costars in the movie. Black subjects caught in stills to be forever archived and passed down through this world so our memories, customs and rituals can last is the biggest takeaway I got from SM direction.

I’m not sure about you, but I want to leave some footprints behind me. A trail of writings, photographs, journals and messages for my children’s children and beyond. I want to say to the my seeds down the line that I was here thinking of you, and to preserve this precious gift of once-upon -a time, in a Black Life.

To the future with love.
